Deception Bay North State School is located within the precincts of Deception Bay within the Shire of Caboolture in south-east Queensland. The community consists of an older seaside township surrounded by ever-expanding residential developments as the move to seaside areas escalates in South-east Queensland. The area has been identified for inclusion in Community Renewal Programs which support areas of relative disadvantage. There is now a balance between retirees and families with young children. The community is also comprised of the largest Pan-Pacific Islander community in Queensland. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are also well represented within the community. Ours is a close-knit, complex community reflecting diverse cultural and socio-economic circumstances. The P&C Association is actively involved in the school with members taking part on school committees, in fundraising and forming part of the large cohort of parents who give their time as volunteers within classrooms. Many parents attend training programs offered by the school to further their skills towards greater participation in the classroom. A broad range of cultural backgrounds is represented within the student population. This diversity brings a richness to the school and an appreciation of difference within the community. The school has experienced a high level of student transience over the past five years resulting, in part, by rising real estate prices and diminishing availability of rental properties. This has resulted in a drop in student numbers from 800+ in 2003 to 660 in 2006. The student population has stabilised over the past twelve months and is expected to remain at its current levels withing the foreseeable future. |
